14th Street Bridge construction enters new phase

For those of you that reverse-commute to Virginia, or find yourself driving out there for errands and things (since we have no grocery store), be aware of the 14th Street Bridge construction which has now entered its 7th (of 8) phase.   The "island" construction will cause a few headaches.

The center lanes will be closed right at the split between the 14th Street Bridge and I-395 as you enter D.C.  This means you should stay to the right if you're going to come in at the 12th Street exit (or L'Enfant Plaza) and stay to the left if you want to take the 14th Street Bridge.

This pattern will be in place for six weeks, and the construction will be complete in 12 weeks.

Police Week in full force this weekend

Police Week has begun, and this weekend there will be a lot of activities around Penn Quarter.

The National Police Memorial will host events Thursday at 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. (Police Unity Tour) and Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. (Candlelight Vigil).

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge at 2nd and H Streets N.W. will continuously be holding an event in the parking lot from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Pipe bands will play on Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday, there will be an Honor Guard competition at John Marshall Plaza (Pennsylvania Ave and 4th Street N.W.) beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Be aware of these events as you plan your weekend, as well as the influx of visitors to our neighborhood.

A full schedule of events and more details are available here.

Mike Isabella to publish a cookbook

Graffiato is not yet open, but Executive Chef and Owner (and Top Chef star) Mike Isabella has not kept too busy to make a book deal.

Isabella announced today that in Fall of 2012 he will introduce his very first cookbook.  The book will be entitled Flavors from a Jersey Italian and will feature his favorite home style dishes.

“My grandmother taught me to cook as a way to occupy my mind and my hands and keep me out of trouble. She passed away when I was 21 and I thought I’d never cook traditional Italian food again,” said Isabella.  “Fifteen years later with the opening of Graffiato, I’m ready to share my version of Italian food and hope I can inspire home cooks with my twist on classic Jersey-Italian dishes.”

While Graffiato will feature Italian-inspired small plates and incorporate influences from his entire culinary career, this cookbook goes back to Chef Isabella’s roots with traditional Jersey-Italian fare.

Graffiato is expected to open in early June.

Spike Mendelsohn's food truck premieres May 20th

Spike Mendelsohn, the celebrity chef, is getting into the food truck business, teaming up with Chef Malcolm Mitchel.  His food truck, to be called Sixth and Rye, will feature corned beef and and salty pickles.

Prince of Petworth reports the food truck will be hitting the streets on Friday, May 20th.

The launch will of course happen at Sixth and I Streets, but the truck promises to make stops "throughout downtown," including Penn Quarter.

All of the food served from the truck will be kosher.  The menu includes items like corned beef, a veggie wrap, and Israeli Conscious Salad.  The truck will also have cookies, braided shabbat challah, and seltzer lemonade.

You can follow the food truck on twitter @sixthandrye.  Check out the menu here.

A look behind the scenes at the Fairfield Inn (formerly Red Roof Inn)

DCMud has a great (and lengthy) piece about the thought process behind the design of the new Fairfield Inn & Suites at 6th and H Streets N.W.    You can check it out here.

The blog also answers the question as to why the Irish Channel has shrunk.  Fairfield had to build its own dining room to provide breakfast for its guests.

Clues than 901 may be opening soon

In February, we suggested that 901 Restaurant may be running behind schedule.  And, in fact, they did miss their April 2011 target opening date.

However, they seem to be very close to opening, and are hiring staff.

A Craigslist Ad that we found advertises open positions at 901 for servers, bartenders, hosts, and bussers.

The ad was posted last week, and directs potential applicants to apply in person at the hotel.   This mass hiring of a lot of personnel means they will train them all at once, probably.  How long will training take?  Impossible to know, especially since some of the staff may be inexperienced (the ad says experience is "preferred").

Another ad was posted last Friday, and said they were accepting applications in the lobby of the hotel.  A number was given for "recorded information," but when you call the number all you get is a recording that says the mailbox is full.

A week earlier, they had advertised a position for an Assistant Manager, which has presumably been filled.  However, at the beginning of the month they had also advertised for that position, as well as a lot of the staff they are currently hiring.  They had also placed ads for back of the house dishwashers and line cooks, but no longer seem to have those positions available.

As soon as we know an opening date, you will know an opening date.

Paul in review

A few nights ago, Penn Quarter Insider rushed to get to Paul before their 7:00 p.m. closing time for an early dinner.  Surprisingly, the place was packed.  There was a line going almost all the way to the door, and most of the seats were full.

There were two of us, and we were both excited to try Paul's fresh baked bread by having one of their signature sandwiches.  We were surprised to find, however, that the sandwiches are not made to order.  So if you wanted yours without mayonnaise or on a different type of bread, you're out of luck.  Furthermore, they are all pre-made in the morning and when they run out, they are out.   By the time Penn Quarter Insider got there, they only had two types of sandwiches left.  Also, be aware that the in-store menu doesn't exactly match up with the online menu, so grab a menu when you walk in.

This system, where they are simply picking up sandwiches and handing them to you, did not make the process go quickly.  The line was long and moved very slowly and the time from ordering a pre-made sandwich to paying for it took an inexplicably long time.

Paul, however, does not seem to be in the business of serving you quickly, so like so many Penn Quarter restaurants.  The space is extremely quiet--even when packed--and very relaxing.   Sitting down in the restaurant makes you feel as if you have been transported to a small town in France.  The hustle and bustle of Penn Quarter melts away around you.

The decor aids this ambiance.  There are classy chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, for example.

Even the high chairs for their younger guests are classy and decorative, not the cheap wood and buckles you are used to seeing:

Another refreshing change is how clean the restaurant is.   We are so used to going to quick-service restaurants in Penn Quarter where the tables are hardly ever even wiped down.  You are constantly sitting in and amongst filth, but not at Paul.

At Paul every table is clean and each place is set with a new and clean paper place mat.  You sit down, and the stress melts away.

The food is hard to judge since you don't get exactly what you want, and, in this case, we only had an option of two sandwiches.   The Sandwich Pavot Poulet was not amazing, but it was good.   You don't get to choose your bread, of course, despite their large selection of bread.  This leaves you buying a loaf of whatever bread you really want to eat on the side, which one person in our party did.

The bread is good.  It's very good.   However, our expectations for the bread were exceedingly high.  We aren't sure the bread is really we-spent-seven-hours-making-this bread (even though they did), but it is good.  The poppy seed baguette was the perfect combination between crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.  The flamand two olive bread is loaded with olives, but it's also loaded with olive pits.  Those come as a surprise, since even olives in a bowl at a bar usually have the pits removed.

All-in-all, Paul is a great place to sit around on a weekend and relax or read the newspaper.  The atmosphere is one that you do not find in Penn Quarter very often.  It is classy, clean, and quiet.  The food is good, though not exceptional.  Sandwiches that are pre-made and sit out all day are only going to be so good though, and these are about as good as they're going to get.  Of course the inability to custom order makes it hard to be completely satisfied.

Our expectations for Paul were very high, and we were extremely excited to try it.  It is not perfect, but we will be back.

Sightings

This morning, NBC's Meet The Press host David Gregory was spotted at the Moultrie Courthouse on Indiana Avenue.  He was waiting around on jury duty, but was not selected for a jury, Yeas & Nays reports.

True Blood stars Anna Paquin and husband Stephen Moyer were spotted at Rasika on Monday night.  They apparently aren't afraid of spicy food, ordering green chili chicken, cauliflower bezule and palak chaat.

Also at Rasika were Huffington Post senior political editor Howard Fineman and Private Practice actor Tim Daly.  They ate after a show at the Shakespeare Theatre.
Around the corner, the Capitals took a night off and ate at The Source.  Yeas & Nays reports that at least nine players (including Mike Green, John Carlson, Scott Hannan, Dennis Wideman, Jason Arnott, D.J. King and Matt Bradley) were seen in the bar eating chicken wings, ribs, sliders and tuna cones. They apparently ordered lamb chops, sambal fish, pork chops, salmon, chili prawns, and short ribs for their entrees.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, Jill Biden was seen eating lunch at Carmine's.

Friday night, Hangover star (and Georgetown alumn) Bradley Cooper was seen at The Passenger.
