Virtual Tunnel Between Gallery Place and Metro Center?

You may have read about last week's changes at Metro that allows riders at Farragut North and Farragut West to transfer between the two stations free of charge if done within 30 minutes.  A customer with a SmarTrip card can exit at Farragut North or West, walk a few blocks above ground, and reenter at the other Farragut station without paying extra.

So far, the system seems to be working - which is good news for our neighborhood for two reasons.  The "Farragut Crossing" saves time but it also "eases congestion at Metro Center, our second busiest rail station," said Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles.

Even better news -  Metro spokesman Dan Stessel has said that if the "Farragut Crossing" program is successful, the idea could be rolled out to Gallery Place and Metro Center.  This will make yellow/green line transfers to blue/orange far more seamless for Metro riders - you can make the block or so walk instead of having to take the red line one stop.

  1. Forget virtual, this one should be a physical tunnel. I believe Metro looked into it a few years ago; the money supposedly wasn't too steep and everyone knows how popular it would be.
