When's It Opening?

  • We've been emailing management at Wagamama for weeks now, trying to get an official update on when (or whether) their Penn Quarter outpost would be opening.  We have yet to get a response.  Though we reported they were testing menus a few months ago, the folks at Prince of Petworth snapped a picture here which reveals that... absolutely no progress has been made inside the building.
Boston has a Wagamama - why can't we?!?

  • Grand Trunk, Indiana Avenue's forthcoming 24/7 South Asian-American fast food restaurant, continues to announce via their window placards that they'll be opening "Winter 2012."  We stopped by this weekend and found that very little progress had been made. The main part of the space has been blocked off from public view, but the window bays are filled with trash.

  • And what of the old Hot Potato Cafe space on E between 6th and 7th?  Though we had heard rumblings that it was to become a pizza place, last time we stopped by, the old menus hadn't even been removed yet:

  1. I actually heard from Mark Bucher (owner of BGR Burger Joint who also helped Michel Richard open Meatballs) that the pizza idea got nixed for the old potatoe valley spot because Carmine's lease prevents anything similar from going into any of the building's other spots (they through a fit when meatballs went in so you can be sure that the Landlord isn't going to piss his biggest tennant off anymore). Shame - would have loved a great local pizza place right under me - one thing that is really missing from this area. And if Carmen's doesn't want a pizza place to go in they should actually sell pizza then!! Other problem with space is it has total lack of venting, so you either have to do a cold food type place or put in special vents (which I dont even know if they'd work in that space).
